review ì Settlers The Mythology of the White Proletariat 106 The authoritative attack on the idea that the American working class is primarily whi. Settlers has been the most influential book I ve ever read clueing me into the revisionism and pro imperialism endemic among the white Euro Amerikan Left since its birth Sakai chronicles the history of Euro Amerikans since they first set foot on the North American continent and the genocide exploitation and oppression that has been perpetuated through the centuries The contradictions between oppressor and oppressed nations is conveniently overlooked by the white Left and Sakai s analysis focuses exactly on that and the historic facts that back his theory up As the title says Sakai breaks down the myth of the white proletariat as well as the benefits of strategic racial integrationalism which has historically resulted in further oppression of the oppressed time immemorial This should be complusory reading for all communists of any race for the brilliant insights Modern white communists continue to disregard Sakai s theory as the imperialist charateristic of the priveleged white Left lives on unabashedly Let this timeless classic be a warning to future leftists of what can happen when the contradictions between nations are not taken into account

review ì Settlers The Mythology of the White Proletariat 106 Book presents US history from a working class revolutionary and non white perspective. This is a dodgy book Its radical and unflinchingly anti racist and anti imperialist nature make it very appealing to those with a sense for justice but no principled marxist framework within which to make sense of it but its politics and conclusion sees whiteness as the death of socialist organising it constitutes a limit as absolute and inescapable as that of classes If you must read it do so for its vivid and well sourced descriptions of violence against all oppressed and colonized people do not however take Sakai s judgements on the complicity and agency of the non black working class as objectively truthful That in other work he deems nazism as a radical and genuinely anti capitalist movement only makes my suspicion of his maoism all the greaterOld review unredacted view spoilerThis is the book Roediger s Class Race and Marxism ought to have been When you first read Capital it is as if reality reconstitutes itself around now excavated ley lines in a series of vast and grinding mutations Settlers unlocks a second necessary explosive landslide Settlers at its core lays down a challenge to marxism as it was traditionally understood While there are a number of Euro Amerikan workers they no longer combine into a separate proletarian class 146 Why is it that the United States have ironically never known a genuinely revolutionary movement Combining proletarian historiography and sprinklings of Marx Lenin and Mao J Sakai dissects the class composition of the United States from its early years and charts the interaction of the white elite and slaves immigrants colonial subjects and other racialized groups demonstrating that a class analysis that fails to take race into account is wrong not just historically but also theoretically By way of subaltern anecdotes official statistics and press snippets Sakai very convincingly argues that in the instances where white US labour movements have been successful these successes were bought at the cost of third world immiseration both locally and internationally where solidarity seemingly transcended racial divisions this was a matter of tactical unity which never left the umbrella of white supremacist overall strategy The only emancipatory movements which could not be recuperated by a white elite were black nationalist movements hence the brutal crackdown on the Black Panther Party the Puerto Rican independence movement and analogous organizations Seemingly proclaiming fidelity to Mao s dictum that to be attacked by the enemy is not a bad thing but a good thing Sakai sheds a sympathetic light on black historical actors who held that the KKK are in fact the most authentic and helpful whites they at least do not cover up the antagonism which in decent America is buried under metaphors and slogans This reader was reminded of the similar development in South Africa which nation as a settler society par excellence also gets its comeuppance in the book that recognizes that the ideal of the post racial rainbow nation is little than an ideological bribe which allows merciless class and hence race based oppressions to root themselves yet deeplyWhile Settlers may initially seem to forego sophisticated analysis for a one dimensional racial perspective it is this very attention to the sensuous reality again 146 of the US class system that allows it to take into account the full complexity of class nature in a settler society on top of that it has the numbers and documentary artifacts to back this analysis upAs Settlers is too rich to fully critiue in the scope of a review I ll keep my few doubts and uestions limited to the following Especially in the the first half of the book focusing on the 17 19th century some of the fanciful anecdotes don t always seem to be sourced On other occasions anecdotes are sometimes kneaded into very skewed historical setpieces for instance Sufi Abdul Hamid whom Settlers casts as an excentric but influential Black Nationalist figurehead was in his time popularly known as the Black Hitler owing to his vehement and sustained antisemitism A nuanced discussion on this matter could have been very fruitful even if it would sidetrack Sakai s otherwise crystal clear analysis The mechanisms through which nonwhite labour is expelled from unionized sectors is left unspecified while of course class based systematic racism is the culprit how this tends to manifest itself is not made explicit Mass firings Selective hiring Arbitrary degree conditions Sakai tends to psychologize the abstract movement of capital and while the relation of dispassionate capitalism to the very libidinal scourge of racism is of utmost importance this techniue runs the risk of smoothing over the possibly resistant will of individuals and ontologizing racism in the same way Ta Nehisi Coates is sometimes accused of doing This is not in and of itself a knock against Settlers the strength of marxist critiue is exactly its ability to look beyond the particular to grasp a universalized system but is not further commented on in the bookIn conclusion Settlers is as essential as Capital it educates on the pitfalls of race blind social movements social analysis that stops at the border and does not take into account the way levers and pulleys in the centre run through the periphery and transracial alliances The way out Sakai would suggest consists of working through all these matters black and female liberation cannot just be a facet of a communist movement but is the prime contradiction of contemporary US empire One hundred percent obligatory reading hide spoiler
