Roja Dove is obviously an expert in perfume and its history The first half of the book is dedicated to just that explaining perfume basics and then going decade by decade through the most important fragrances of the 20th century The second half though is devoted to micro biographies of famous designers who asked for this and a ton of photos of perfume bottles without much information about them So I am giving this book three stars for a superb first half and a disappointing second half I also found this book s font nearly impossible to read as it is absolutely tiny and dense

I received this book as a gift It is no doubt beautifully illustrated I usually don t like looking at pictures of perfume bottles but here they have been historically contextualized One can see paintings showing the distillation of natural oils copies of Guerlain s catalogues from the beginning of the 20th century and pictures of vintage perfume bottles The colorful illustrations are the main strength of this book The content is sketchy It lists for example the natural raw ingredients in perfumery accompanied by their pictures The information can be found of course on different Internet sites but some may still appreciate having them all together in one source It could be a nice coffee table book if you are into that I am not My coffee table is messier and the books on it are usually not for show they are working books If you are like me you will end up leafing through the glossy pages and placing the book somewhere on a shelf not to re visit it often
